I got banned!!! I assume that I was banned accidentally as part of this cleanup. Now my membership is reinstated, but my posts in the discussions appear to be gone, which is disheartening. As for ning, or any alternative: The 'killer' social network must be fully open source (i.e. facebook is so not it). There is already an open source social network framework called elgg, but it needs to be more user-friendly, and scalable to millions of users with multiple servers etc. It will come sooner or later, because users will eventually get fed up with slow moving companies doing the wrong thing and having the wrong priorities. The next big thing will be google Wave, surely kill facebook, but it's still in the hands of google.
